Abbott said the hospital stay helped her renew her religious faith and set her on a path to go back to school. She enrolled in Thomas Nelson Community College and Christopher Newport University, where she played on the tennis team as a 44-year-old student.
Abbott worked as a paralegal for CNU President Paul Trible's law office before working at the school. Trible eventually extended a scholarship to Abbott, offering glowing praise.

Rebecca Pember, a native of Newport News, had a conference room at AAFES Headquarters named in her honor Sept. 14. Pember is a civilian who works for AAFES, and has been deployed to Iraq three times. She was one of the first recipients of the Defense of Freedom Award, which is the equivalent of the Purple Heart in the military. Pember was injured in Iraq twice. She has been in Iraq again and has been there two years this past August. Pember is a graduate from Warwick High School and Christopher Newport University.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine appointed new members to the Board of Visitors at the College of William and Mary and Christopher Newport University. At CNU, Carlos M. Brown, of Henrico County, and Preston M. White, of Virginia Beach, are the board's newest appointees. Michael C. Martin, of Prince William County, was reappointed.

The Tribles moved into the 6,985 square-foot Georgian style waterfront home on Riverside Drive last spring, just weeks before graduation. They christened the house's public spaces with nine events, including receptions for the graduates. "The students walked in the door and I said, this is your house," Rosemary Trible said, sitting in the reception hall she calls the great room. "It's for the students."
